Does anyone know what makes a plant spiral clockwise or counter-clockwise?

I've noticed that some climbing plants curl around their support clockwise and some counter-clockwise (if looking down from above). Is there any known reason for this, such as originating in the northern or southern hemisphere, or is it just a matter of being left-handed or right-handed? Is there a genetic marker for this?
