Stratocaster/Telecaster vs Les Paul?

i have some yamaha eg 112 or something and i get decent enough sounds for u2 out of that but for some songs like one, until the end .... ect he uses Les pauls... i also have a Les paul custom sgh but i cant seem 2 get any good tones out of it so i was wonderin is there anything u should change when using a l p instead if a strat like boost mids / trebs or something because i get a very dead sound if it is not on full trebble and that doesnt sound that nice either :P thanks in advance
