Why does my mate always refer to his wife as 'my wife' rather than her actual name?

I have a friend who is always referring to his wife as 'my wife', not her real name, 'Bec'. It's like he is subliminally trying to emphasize that they are married and we aren't. We know they are married. He doesn't have to keep reminding us. Why is he doing this?
